 1987-91 -- Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow
1987-92 -- NSF Presidential Young Investigator
1987-90 -- DOE Outstanding Junior Investigator.
Research Interests
Superstring/M-theories; specifically, their geometrical structure and their role in grand unification and the quantization of gravity. Also theories of random surfaces, quantum gravity, black hole physics, two-dimensional quantum field theory.

Research History

Discoverer of one of the four consistent string theories in collaboration with co-workers at Princeton[3-5], currently considered the most promising framework for a unified theory of the physical world. Kinematic and dynamical structure of superstrings has also been investigated in various publications[6-9,17,19,24,26]. In particular, the coupling of strings to background fields in spacetime[6] and a covariant quantization procedure[8,9] were developed; relations between string dynamics and the general theory of the renormalization group have also been investigated[17,24,26]. Discovered construction relating all known critical string theories[45,46,47]. Showed how to describe D-branes (a class of spatially extended objects in string theory) as string field solitons [66,67,68].
